Journal of Refugee studies: “Power in Forced Migration Research Methods”

September 2021 Issue

This issue of the Journal of Refugee Studies includes an introduction by RIT director Karen Jacobsen and RIT Advisory Board member Adam Saltsman, both of whom served as guest editors for the special section on power in forced migration research methods. In their introduction, Prof. Jacobsen and Mr. Saltsman frame their approach as seeking to address questions such as: What are the politics of designing methods for research with/on refugees? What kinds of negotiations and gatekeeping take place in determining the assemblage of actors involved in crafting and carrying out the research? Who has a seat at the table to design the research, interpret results, and write up outcomes?

REFUGEES IN TOWNS: EXPERIENCES OF INTEGRATION

SPECIAL ISSUE

In this Special Issue of MDPI’s Social Sciences journal, seven articles explore urban integration in the cities and towns of Europe, the US, and Canada. The papers explore how refugees and citizens interact in the authors’ towns; the role of officials and politicians in enabling or obstructing integration; the social, economic, and cultural impact of migration on hosting towns; and the ways—inclusive or exclusive—locals have responded to immigration. The first five articles explore European cities: Frankfurt-Rodelheim, Germany; Newcastle, UK; Ambertois, France; Italy’s cities; and Belgrade, Serbia. The final two articles look at North American cities: Bhutanese refugee-hosting US cities, and the Syrian refugee-hosting town of Antigonish, Canada.
